Buford, Georgia, straddles two counties: Gwinnett and Hall. Home to around 17,000, most of the city is situated in Gwinnett County, with just a small portion stretching into Hall County. The city was named in honor of the former president of the Richmond and Danville Railroad, Algernon Sidney Buford, and was founded in 1872.

By the turn of the 20th century, Buford became known for its leather industry. It was nicknamed “The Leather City,” famed for making a range of leather goods, like saddles, bridles, and footwear. Its “Tannery Row” shoe factory stands proudly as a symbol of the city’s leather trade and remains one of Buford’s best landmarks. However, the local leather industry ended after a major fire in 1981.

These days, Buford is better known to Georgia residents as the home of the Mall of Georgia, the biggest in the state. It also has many notable parks and walking trails, like Bogan and Buford Dam, to provide excellent outdoor recreation opportunities. Other notable landmarks include the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center and the historic Chesser-Williams home, which dates back before the city’s founding, before the 1850s.
